How to Improve Skin Texture

Skin texture problems affect people from all walks of life. Every skin type can struggle with texture issues and it can interfere with many aspects of our lives. This struggle can range from your makeup not appearing as smooth as you wish, to your confidence can be affected due to acne scarring, or your skin’s overall appearance looking tired and dull.

If you’re struggling with the texture of your skin, you’re going to want to read through this guide because achieving smooth, glowing skin is not only possible, it’s easy! Let’s jump into it.

What are Skin Texture Issues?

We’re all born with baby-soft skin but every year we grow older, we collect superficial inconsistencies.  Skin’s surface comes in so many shapes and sizes, and the way that light hits our skin can show inconsistencies with shadowing for example: enlarged pores, rough patches, bumps, scars, and more. Anything that makes your skin look or feel less smooth and uneven is a skin texture issue.

Skin texture can be a big deal, especially as we get older and the smoothness of our skin fades. Many of these issues can worsen with age as we lose collagen and elasticity and can make us look older, tired, and worn out.

For those experiencing skin texture issues, though, there is good news. Unwanted texture on your skin can be treated and improved.

Causes Of Rough or Textured Skin

Your skin can develop texture problems as a result of a number of things. The most common cause tends to be dryness. When your skin is lacking hydration, it can become creepy, flaky, dull, and scaly.

Acne is also a major cause of skin texture complaints as well as the scarring that results from acne. These bumps that occurred as a teenager or young adult can leave life ling icepick and rolling scars on the face, back and chest.  People also commonly complain about enlarged pores.  These minute openings in the surface can vary in size and tend to give a textured look to the skin and along with fine lines and wrinkles that tend to occur with age.

You may experience milia, which are minuscule white bumps or cysts around your eye or cheek area that cause your skin to look imperfect. Your diet and hydration levels can cause dry skin and roughness.  Lastly sun exposure over the years can cause damage to the cells and leave skin looking creepy, scaly with precancerous lesions and even lead to surgical scars due to skin cancer removals.

How to Improve Skin Texture: 6 Different Ways

No matter the cause, your textured skin can improve with the right habits and treatments. To see smoother skin over time, you have a few options to choose from. Let’s go over how to improve skin texture at home. Here are six relatively easy ways to treat skin texture problems by yourself.

1. Apply Sunscreen Daily

Think of sunscreen as the skincare holy grail. This is one of the best products to help improve and decrease textured skin. Daily use of sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV rays that can prematurely age the skin causing enlarged pores.  Its use can also decrease risk of skin cancer and precancerous lesions (actinic Keratosis) that can lead to red flaky “dry-looking” skin and even scarring due to biopsies or surgical removal.

The sun is incredibly damaging to the skin over time, even if you don’t feel sunburned. The effects of the sun happen on hot summer days and on overcast, mid-winter days. Whether it’s snowing, sunny or anything in between, you should be wearing your sunscreen DAILY to diminish the harmful effects of UV radiation.

Select a sunscreen labeled “broad-spectrum” that is at least SPF 30 or more.  . Broad-spectrum indicates that the product will protect you from a spectrum of different light radiation, including UVA and UVB. I also recommend choosing a product that contains atleast one physical/mineral sun blocker ingredient like Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide (or better yet both).

EltaMD Restore SPF 40 and SkinBetter SunBetter SPF 75 are great choices, as well as Revision Skincare’s Intellishade SPF 45. They’re all high-end, top-performing products and we’re happy to carry multiple skincare lines at Refine Aesthetics.

2. Exfoliate with Glycolic Acid to Smooth It Out

Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid made from the sugar cane plant. It is one of many popular acids used in chemical peels to smooth out the skin and fight the signs of aging. These acids raise the acidity level of the skin, which changes the pH level.

When your skin’s pH level changes, cells in your skin loosen their grip on dead cells, causing dead skin to peel away. You’re left with a fresh, new layer of skin with less texture.

You can find glycolic acid in serums, toners, cleansers, and creams, but some of these products can contain other exfoliants that can sometimes be drying or irritating. Use your glycolic acid serum in the evening, as it will increase your skin’s sun sensitivity.

Skinceuticals Glycolic Renewal cleanser gel and Skinbetter Science Intensive AlphaRet Overnight Cream is a great source of glycolic acid. Refine Aesthetics proudly carries this line of skincare so ask for it at your next visit.

3. Add Vitamin C to Your Routine

With powerful antioxidants, Vitamin C has the ability to fight free radical damage. It’s also been shown to reduce the signs of aging, tackle hyperpigmentation, help with hydration and increase collagen levels. The best benefit Vitamin C can offer your skin, though, is improved skin tone and texture.

Vitamin C, in all its forms, helps to protect your skin from the damage caused by the elements. It has the ability to help produce collagen and reduce dark spots and scar tissue, all of which improve the overall texture of the skin. Vitamin C is a must-have step in your skincare routine- It generally is recommended to use in the AM prior to applying your sunscreen.

You can get loads of Vitamin C in your diet or take an oral supplement, but many skin care products these days are fortified with this miracle vitamin to improve skin texture. You’ll be happy to know that you can find the Revision Skincare Vitamin C 30%+  moisturizer as well Skinceuticals many skincare options with Vitamin C solutions at Refine Aesthetics.

4. Use a Retinol

Retinol is a powerful tool in refining the look of skin. This ingredient is a product of vitamin A and unless you are pregnant or breastfeeding I highly recommend patients- both men and women use this type of product regularly.  Retinol’s power lies in antioxidants and their ability to fight free radicals, its ability to regulate oil production which over time helps decrease acne, pore size and increase cellular turnover.  Retinol also increases the production of collagen and elastin, two compounds responsible for your skin’s elasticity.

This effect smooths the skin by diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as enlarged pores. Retinol can also be packaged solo or combined with other products like lactic acid and salicylic acid to also cause the dead skin to exfoliate, improving the overall texture and tone of your skin.

Most Retinols are deactivated by the sun and also make your skin sun-sensitive so it is highly recommended to use your retinol products at night. We recommend starting with a low dose product mixed with a moisturizer every other night and increasing frequency as tolerated over the next few weeks- as this is a very strong ingredient. Alastin carries a great starter overnight retinol cream as well as SkinBetter AlphaRet which you can ask about the next time you visit Refine Aesthetics.

5. Incorporate an Exfoliation Tool Into Your Daily Routine

There are many different exfoliating tools for your skin that are extremely gentle and won’t cause the abrasions that some exfoliating cleansers and scrubs will.

For instance, a silicon scrubber like the PMD Clean Smart Facial Cleansing Device gently loosens dead skin as you use it with your favorite facial cleanser.  If you decide to use a scrub- be mindful to only use once to twice weekly as causing more irritation can have a reverse effect on skin.

6. Seek Help From a Professional

At-home treatments are great for mild texture issues but sometimes the results don’t come as quickly as we’d like. Other times, we might be facing uneven skin texture that can only be improved by an experienced professional.

A skilled dermatologist and skincare practitioner is going to be able to offer you much more medically oriented and powerful treatments to alleviate your skin texture concerns.

Refine Aesthetics offers a long line of treatments as well as experienced medical  and aesthetic providers that will help you achieve improved skin texture.   Take us up on our free consultation so we can discuss how to help you help your skin

Medical Procedures to Improve Skin Texture

If the at-home DIY treatments for uneven skin  just aren’t cutting it for you, that’s normal. Over time, they can cost a lot and the results can be a long time coming. While many of them should be adopted for your skin health either way, sometimes a professional’s advice is a better choice.

If you’ve decided you need to seek the advice of a dermatologist, they can tell you how to improve skin texture with in-office treatments. Here are some of the procedures they might recommend for you:

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are a controlled injury that removes a few layers of skin, revealing glowing new skin underneath.  The healing process is induced which results in a smoother texture. This treatment is perfect for acne scarring, discoloration, fine lines, and wrinkles. There are many different types of peels offered at Refine Aesthetics that range in downtime, cost and can vary in aggressiveness depending on skin color and issues being addressed.

Microneedling

Like chemical peels, microneedling also induces a healing mechanism as a result of controlled injury. This will boost the production of collagen and elastin, improving the skin’s overall complexion and reducing the visibility of scars, fine lines, and wrinkles. This procedure is safe for all skin types and color.  This treatment has minimal downtime and can be used as a stand alone treatment or in combo with other therapies.

Platelet Rich Plasma & Exosomes

Platelet-rich plasma and/or Exosome injections stimulate collagen and improve the hydration of your skin cells. PRP is a process in which your blood is drawn to have your platelets isolated from it which are then reintroduced into your body. Exosomes are signaling proteins found in stem cells that the DNA has been removed through a proprietary process.   These therapies result in smoother skin, fewer wrinkles and lines, and a reduction in the appearance of large pores and scars. This is a common treatment used in combination with resurfacing treatments or can be injected.

Fractional Resurfacing

Fractional resurfacing minimizes sun damage, discoloration, acne scarring, and wrinkles through the use of a laser that induces a healing process, resulting in fresh, renewed skin. With these treatments we are able to target different depths and % of skin to help address textural issues on the face as well as neck, body, and stretchmarks. Opus Plasma Resurfacing are available at Refine Aesthetics.
